What’s the 411? Awesome New Tech from Mingly, Inbenta, Pointburst, Storify, AskTheOwls, Placeme, Planwise & Vidcaster!

SF New Tech is the Bay Area’s largest monthly technology event and networking mixer. SF New Tech’s stage is a platform for young startups and established companies alike, to show off what they’ve been working on in front of a room full of people who actually care. It’s made possible thanks to Myles Weissleder & Matthew M. Gonzales.

Below I have included some explanations to accompany my notes from the 5 minute presentations. Click the links to find out more about the exciting new apps designed to help you run your life more efficiently.

Mingly

ming.ly
Relationships are about people, not contacts, messages or updates. Mingly was founded to help people stay better connected with an easy-to-use, lightweight relationship management tool.

Inbenta

www.inbenta.com
Since its creation, inbenta has put a lot of effort into developing skills in computational linguistics, web technologies, customer service solutions, and online marketing strategies. It was through these four key competencies that their offer of services and solutions evolved over time until finally achieving the main expectations of key accounts’ website and intranet nowadays.

Pointburst

www.pointburst.com
Most marketers lack the resources to keep their existing social media presence vibrant, much less the time to build out strategies that create broader, viral online experiences. Founded in March 2010, PointBurst solves the pains of traditional social media broadcasting with an innovative cloud-based platform that streamlines every part of social media marketing and communication.

PointBurst named one of four best social media tools for bands: Dan Seitz writes about the four social media tools showcased at SXSW believed to help change the future of music. Click here to view the article.

Storify

storify.com
Storify helps its users tell stories by curating social media. We launched our private beta as a finalist at TechCrunch Disrupt in September 2010, and won the Startup Accelerator at South by Southwest in 2011. Our public beta went live in late April 2011.

We’re based in San Francisco in a newly remodeled loft office in the heart of the city.

Ask The Owls

www.askowls.com
AskOwls is being privately tested by a limited group of users. If you have been invited, please enter the invite code below. If you would like to request an invite code, please email support@askowls.com.

Placeme

www.placemeapp.com
Always remember your places
 Automatic: No Check-ins Required
Private: Your Location is Never Broadcast
Easy: Quickly Search All Your Visits

Planwise

planwise.com
Planwise is a San Francisco-based technology company that was formed in January 2011. We are not a bank or an advisor. We provide technology to consumers to help them better understand the future financial impact of the decisions they make today, especially when those decisions involve a credit product.

We help consumers to then connect to lenders and advisors to realize their plans.

Vidcaster

www.vidcaster.com
Vidcaster is a powerful video workflow management and publishing tool. It provides easy-to-use and powerful building blocks to video content creators, with the hope of freeing video producers to focus on the content and the effect their content has on the world instead of technical and workflow logistics.

Social TV is the new buzz word that industry people are prepping for, even though most users have no clue what it means.

Social television is a general term for technology that supports communication and social interaction in either the context of watching television, or related to TV content. It also includes the study of television-related social behavior, devices and networks. – wikipedia.org

According to industry professionals… the future is all about 2nd screen experiences. Apparently eating popcorn is no longer the only thing you will do while watching a movie… or enjoying a sitcom. We have been living in a “leaning back” un-participatory TV watching society. The TV industry is pushing for… and believes you want… a fully engaged “leaning in” visual experience. (On the large screen and your TV.)

This week I had the pleasure of joining the “Social TV Summit” and take notes on the epic places the industry professionals believe we are heading. First topic “Piracy.” Instantly I started realized the TV industry is experiencing what the music industry dealt with 10 years ago. I also started to wonder if maybe innovation in the music industry might be 10 years ahead of TV industry.

Based on these suspicions… I believe the TV industry needs to learn from the music industry: Focus on the experience not the product!

Building and maintaining an audience is as important to a successful music career as it is to a venue, restaurant, theater, and even a retail store.

Buzz - A survival guide for emerging indie musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Building and maintaining an audience is as important to a successful music career as it is to a venue, restaurant, theater, and even a retail store.

Buzz helps the community flourish by actively curating a collection of advice from existing bands, spotlighting venues that cater to indie music, and building a network of resources designed with the indie musician in mind. Buzz provides unique guidance and best practices across every style of music, based on years of research. The backbone of Buzz’s message of Persona, Planning, Promoting, Plugging-in, and Playing, relates to any person or group attempting to build an audience.

Today, I am launching the first book in my survival guide series, which is available for download. BUZZ: PLAN covers all the info a band needs to get started.

All are welcome to stand up and present an up to 1-minute pitch about their company or project to connect with others who may want to work with you.

Let me start by saying 1. Next time please talk slower! It’s really hard to write down what you’re saying. 2. If you have a crazy funky name please spell it out. 3. Say your name again when you’re done talking… 99% chance none of us heard or understood your nervous pitch when you started talking! However… by way of some difficult googling… I have attached a list of as many presenters as I could find, I hope you find it useful!

Illustrated Notes & Video by: Stefan – SF Intercom

The SF MusicTech Summit brings together visionaries in the music/technology space, along with the best and brightest developers, entrepreneurs, investors, service providers, journalists, musicians and organizations who work with them at the convergence of culture and commerce.

This is the 4th SF MusicTech I have had the privilege to attend. I must admit it is by far my favorite music and tech event in San Francisco. If you see me there… I always have my journal on me. Why you ask… the event always draws the brightest people, and I don’t want to miss the opportunity to write down everything they say. (I know the panelists get a kick out of seeing the crappy cartoon drawings of themselves.)

I’ve created a video synopsis of the event… but sometimes a video just moves too fast and you want to see each drawing at a speed you can handle. For this reason I have also included all my drawings for your viewing pleasure.

What I’ve learned while on tour.

1. It is impossible to avoid Fast-food, be smart.

2. You’re going to eat a lot of Fast-food, practice variety.
(I like Ian’s advice from I The Mighty.. STAY AWAY FROM FAST-FOOD… Try and eat Subway or something)
(Ian… Isn’t that still fast food?)

3. Find popular hangout before your show… invite those people to come!!!
(It will increase the cool kid count)

4. Free WIFI is amazing when on tour.
(If you’re going to tour a lot… pay for tethering access for your phone.)

5. It’s hard to find a shower, but you can brush your teeth anywhere.

6. Your facial hair will grow… shave in restaurant bathrooms, gas station bathroom and the venue.

7. Wet-wipes make for amazing showers, and if you bring them… use them!!!
(BUM SHOWER, HO SHOWER, YOUR SHOWER…)

8. Beware of chap lips, bring ChapStick, Carmex, Lip Balm.
(The air is drying outside San Francisco)

9. Eat your healthy food before it goes bad.
(Why bring it if you’re going to throw it away?)

10. Pack lots of socks and underwear… AND CHANGE THEM!!!
(Why pack them if you’re not going to change them?)

11. Make a checklist, don’t forget things at venue and houses.

12. Bring something to entertain yourself in the car.
(Books on tape are a great way to stay entertained in the car.)
(I rented 2 movies from a Red Box)

13. You’re going to sleep in the van, bring pillows and blankets.
(Sleeping in the car is cold.)

14. Bring a sleeping bag pad.
(Sleeping on hard floors is… hard!!!)

15. Collect and send post-cards to loved ones.
(Shockingly… some people are going to miss you!)

16. Don’t fart in the van, if you fart in the van I’m going to hit you, If you fart, claim it…. I know it was you!!!

17. Want to feel refreshed after playing a show and sleeping in a car? Drink less beer at the gig. I know it’s free, that doesn’t mean you gotta drink it all.

18. Want to make more money? Stop buying bottles of liqueur and sneaking them in the show.
(Though in truth you are saving money by not buying from the bar?!)

19. Keep track of what you’re owed. That’s your responsibility. Do not let the promoter talk you out of the guarantee. If there were not enough people at the show… it’s their fault!!!

20. Touring makes everyone crazy… Remember, moods pass!!!

21. & finally… The guest-list is for friends, family & people you might want to hook up with.
(Everyone else can pay.)

I had the opportunity to hear from Sid Savara, a serious game changing blogger. I think his story could help to encourage and motivate you to become a better blogger with goals and world changing ideas.

Sid Savara broke down each of Robert Cialdini’s Six Weapons of Influence, and scientifically applied them to blogging. These 6 “weapons of influence” include Reciprocity, Commitment and Consistency, Social Proof, Authority, Liking, Scarcity. Understanding human psychology and the way that your readers perceive you allows you to ethically position your blog in a way that will increase traffic, subscribers and ultimately help you sell more to your customers.
